Shogun: novel adaptation to film in the UK and Japan

Posted Filed under

Shogun, the FX channel’s adaptation of James Clavell’s novel of the same name, is lining up some filming time in the UK. The best-selling book was written in 1975 and set in feudal Japan, with a plot that packs in plentiful samurais and mysteries.

DNA Films & TV is producing the 10-part adaptation for FX. The trusted industry website The Knowledge Online reports that a “short stint” of filming will take place in Japan, with the rest of the production seemingly being based in the UK.

Shogun was previously adapted into an NBC miniseries back in 1980. Ronan Bennett (Public Enemies) and Rachel Bennette (Bel Ami) are writing the new adaptation, and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Tim Van Patten (The Sopranos, Game of Thrones) is directing multiple episodes. We don’t know yet who will star in the show.

GoodReads lists this as the official synopsis of the Shogun novel:

“A bold English adventurer. An invincible Japanese warlord. A beautiful woman torn between two ways of life, two ways of love. All brought together in an extraordinary saga of a time and a place aflame with conflict, passion, ambition, lust, and the struggle for power…”
