Speaking to TVLine, he teased: “I’ve got various plans, but all I can say emphatically is it will be huge. It won’t be just one thing… We’ll be doing lots of stuff.”

Doctor Who will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2013. The first ever episode aired on BBC One on Saturday 23rd November 1963.

Moffat added: “The plans are quite extensive and changing all the time. Oh my God, we will hit that year very, very hard indeed. There’s lot of decisions we’re making that are about making all that possible. It’ll be amazing.”

Asked whether previous Doctors and other familiar faces may return, the writer hinted: “Possibly… It’s so far in the future, it’s only a set of notions.”

The second half of Series 6 kicks off with Moffat’s ‘Let’s Kill Hitler’ on Saturday 27th August.
