The Last Post has aired its last episode, with the BBC opting not to renew the period drama for a second series. The military-adjacent, family-focused series was created by Peter Moffat, and it ran for six episodes on BBC One.
The BBC released this statement to break the news:
“The Last Post was a fantastic series but we can confirm it won’t be returning. We are looking to bring new ideas to BBC One and tell new stories. We’d like to thank Peter, the brilliant cast and production team for all their hard work on the series.”
Based on Moffat’s own childhood memories and with his mother serving as a particular inspiration for the show, The Last Post explored the emotional entanglements between a unit of Royal Military Police officers stationed in Yemen and their families.
To bring Moffat’s series to life, the BBC assembled an impressive cast including Jeremy Neumark Jones (One Of Us), Jessica Raine (Line Of Duty), Ben Miles (The Crown), Jessie Buckley (War And Peace), Amanda Drew (Broadchurch) and Stephen Campbell Moore (The Go-Between).
It’s unclear exactly why The Last Post wasn’t picked up for another set of episodes, especially considering that it did decent ratings (the numbers suggest that around 6 million people watched the show). If we had to guess, we’d suggest that maybe the show’s production costs were too high for the BBC to justify doing more.
More news as we hear it.
