The actress, who played Jenna Sommers in The Vampire Diaries, will play predator attack expert Dylan Weir in the 13-part series, which will air in the UK on entertainment channel Watch later this year.
On set in Vancouver, Canning told SciFiNow: “On [The Vampire Diaries]… I was always longing to be out in the field when they’d be shooting the crazy scenes in the woods where people were getting attacked. Now I’m right in the thick of it. In this show I’m running, running, running, shooting, shooting, shooting right in the middle of all the danger.”
Canning’s co-star Niall Matter (A Town Called Eureka) has hinted that Primeval: New World will have “a harder edge” than the original UK show.
Series 5 of Primeval is currently airing on ITV1 on Saturday evenings.
