The Walking Dead season 9 will have a time jump of its own, after season 8 allowed us to look at Carl Grimes’ idyllic imagined version of the future. Carl’s “Old Man Rick” fantasies have come to an end now, but the show isn’t finished flitting about in time.
Angela Kang, the new Walking Dead showrunner that has taken over for season 9, was previously quoted by THR as saying this:
“We’re playing with time in the season, so we get to jump forward in the story.”
And now, speaking to EW, she’s added all these extra details about The Walking Dead‘s season 9 time jump:
“We’ll explore what happened as man made objects and structures break down. Infrastructure like roads and bridges are changing and crumbling. And we’ll also explore what happens as resources are getting low […] There’s a fun Western vibe that has emerged. We are going into a period where a lot of the things that we’ve seen in previous seasons have broken down, so they’ve got these horses and carriages that are being drawn around instead of cars. Things are lit with oil lamps. People are using different kinds of weaponry. There’s a real grittiness to it that I think will be fun and fresh for the viewers.”
EW also unleashed this image of Michonne on a horse, which is, along with the poster atop this page, our first real look at the next season of the show:
Kang also said this, teasing what the group dynamics will look like in season 9:
“We’ll see our group together working in unity in a lot of ways, but you’ll also see some changes in the way that they deal with each other. In some ways, you’ll see that the vision has succeeded beyond anybody’s wildest imagination. But you’ll also see the cracks in that.”
Fans already know that Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes and Lauren Cohan’s Maggie Rhee (née Greene) are leaving The Walking Dead this year, but Kang has not droped any hints as to how these departures will be written into the story.
We’ll bring you more The Walking Dead season 9 news as we hear it.
