The summer of 2015 sees the legendary Irish rockers U2 bring their new Innocence + Experience tour to Europe, with bassist Adam Clayton hinting that the group might tinker with their usual format this time out.
The release of their latest album, Songs of Innocence, caused controversy recently thanks to the marketing campaign utilised to promote it. The album was placed into the libraries of all iTunes users and was free to download. Many users were unhappy at the move and Apple hastily prepared a method for the offending item to be removed.
U2 frontman Bono claimed that his band’s work was, “A bottle of milk in the fridge that they weren’t asking for”. Even so, the vast numbers of people downloading the album—it has been downloaded over 26 million times—suggest that demand for tickets will be very high for next year’s tour.
Bassist Adam Clayton spoke to Rolling Stone magazine recently and hinted that U2 might experiment with the idea of two different shows in each city: “One night would be a kind of loud, explosive rock & roll kind of event and then the other night’s show take the acoustic arrangements of some of the songs, and kind of present those songs in a much more intimate way.”
Their 360 world stadium tour was the biggest of all time, so with (relatively) smaller venues and more intimate settings, Innocence + Experience is shaping up to be a very different animal.
The deluxe version of Songs of Innocence contains a set of acoustic versions of the songs, lending themselves to the loud/quiet concept. In the same Rolling Stone piece, Bono spoke of how he had to cajole guitarist The Edge into putting in a little overtime once the original recording sessions were complete.
“I saw The Edge with his head in his hands, and he said, ‘It’s taken us three years to finish this album, and you’re saying we have to do another album in a week?’ I said, ‘Edge, all the work over the last three years is going to mean that we can do it.”
Spring sees U2 travel across North America and following a brief break in the summer, they return to Europe in September.
