Will Disney revive the Defenders shows? Apparently “that’s a possibility”

Posted Filed under

Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist have all been cancelled by Netflix, around the same time that Disney is working on launching its own streaming service called Disney+. This has led fans to speculate. Will these shows be revived on the Disney+ service at some point down the line?

Natalie Jarvey of The Hollywood Reporter sat down with Disney’s top dealmaker, Kevin Mayer, and asked him that very question. On the topic of whether Disney+ will bring back these cancelled shows, which all came together for The Defenders miniseries, Mayer said this:

“They are very high-quality shows. We haven’t yet discussed that, but I would say that’s a possibility.”

This, of course, is not confirmation that the shows are coming back. But it does seem to be proof that such a transition, from Netflix onto Disney+, is possible from a legal standpoint (that is to say, Netflix don’t hold the indefinite rights to producing those shows, it would seem).

Jessica Jones season 3 and The Punisher season 2 are still to come on Netflix, but nobody would be surprised to see the plug pulled on those shows – in a similar fashion to Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist‘s cancellations – shortly after their new seasons have aired.

As all these shows do or do not move forward, we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
