The wait for series 2 of His Dark Materials is over as it returns to BBC1 this Sunday (November 8). When we last saw Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen) she was faced with a portal to another world. What happens when she passes through? Not long to wait now.
This series is based on Philip Pullman’s The Subtle Knife and continues the adventures of Lyra, her father Lord Asriel (James McAvoy) and mother Mrs Coulter (Ruth Wilson). Events continue to unfold back in the Magisterium, with Mrs Coulter busy interrogating a witch as Lee Scoresby (Lin-Manuel Miranda) has a new mission of his own.
The BBC has updated the His Dark Materials website with various clips and behind the scenes videos as well as a trailer for series 2 and for the first episode The City of Magpies. Lyra meets Will (Amir Wilson) but can she trust him? Why has the city of Cittàgazze been abandoned, and why won’t Lyra use the alethiometer? Sunday’s episode will raise more questions than it answers.
There’s still time to remind yourselves of Lyra’s adventures so far with daemons, airships, polar wastes and armoured bears as the whole of series 1 is available on iPlayer for over a year.
