The creator of Westeros sets up the runners and riders in the race to succeed King Viserys.
With House of the Dragon imminent, it’s time for viewers to return to Westeros. However, while the Targaryen dynasty were all but a spent force at the beginning of Game of Thrones, the new show finds them at the height of their powers.
Forget Starks and Lannisters, this show has Targaryens at its heart as it tells the tale of “Dance of the Dragons” – the Targareyn civil war.
Across a five minute explainer, illustrated with clips and animation, George R.R. Martin explains the backstory to the new show. Explaining the Targaryen lineage that has brought us to this point, we’re also introduced to their allies, the Hightowers of Old Town, as well as the former seafarers of house Velaryon.
Naturally, he also tells us a bit about dragons and how their presence can tip the balance of war…
House of the Dragon stars a host of familiar faces. Matt Smith stars as Prince Daemon Targaryen, alongside Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenrya. Rhys Ifans plays Ser Otto Hightower, the Hand of the King, with Olivia Cooke as his daughter Lady Alicent.
The cast also includes Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, The Sea Snake. Plus, Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria and Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen.
The show runs for 10 episodes and launches on HBO on Sunday, August the 21st. For us Brits, it’s on Sky Atlantic and Now from Monday 22nd.
