Where there’s unbelievable tragedy, there’s public interest. And where there’s public interest, there’s usually a few films and TV shows that seek to fulfil that fascination. And so, Jack Thorne has revealed that he’d be interested in writing a series based on Grenfell Tower.
The BAFTA-winning scribe stated his intentions during the publicity for Channel 4’s Kiri, with Radio Times quoting him as saying: “Grenfell is certainly something we should be working out how to dramatise. It’s really complicated and the longer you spend on it the more complicated you realise it is. It overwhelms me that it’s not being talked about it as much as it should be and I still can’t believe this happened in our country.
“In a country which is supposed to have money, I can’t believe we inflicted that on people. And I can’t believe that they were screaming out for help and no one listened. I think we’re all responsible for it and we need to work out a way to come to terms with it.”
Now it should be noted that this is just a guy talking, and doesn’t mean that anything is or will be in development any time soon. There’s a question of taste, for example, with some survivors of the disaster still to be rehomed etc. That said, like with any widespread news event, the time will come when a dramatisation could be necessary.
