Actor Manu Bennett, who has portrayed Deathstroke aka Slade Wilson on The CW’s Arrow for six seasons, has spoken to executive producer Marc Guggenheim about a potential Deathstroke spin-off.
“Marc Guggenheim and I talked about a Deathstroke TV series, which would be awesome,” Bennett told us at MCM London Comic-Con. “If we could make it R-rated, maybe leap onto another network platform where we could be at the Logan-esque level. We could write that series, but it’s not our property. I know the fanbase would be keen for it.”
The massive growth of the DCEU over recent years, both on the big and small screens, has meant that multiple versions of certain characters (e.g. The Flash) now exist in ongoing properties. Some supporting heroes and villains, however, have been kept on a tight leash for use in Warner Bros’ movie franchise, making it difficult for Arrow and it’s fellow CW superhero shows to use certain characters.
The announcement that a big-screen Deathstroke movie starring Joe Manganiello is in the works has therefore put Bennett and Guggenheim’s version of the character on hold, as the actor explained.
“Marc has been fairly honest with me about the ways in which he’s been constrained in terms of how to include Deathstroke in Arrow,” he continued. “Warner Bros’ film branch have made it impossible to use certain characters such as the Suicide Squad; Harley Quinn; Deadshot.
“All of these characters could have been fleshed out more but the Warner Bros parent company said they’re going to use them in the films and so Arrow had to step back from using them in the TV series. It’s a shame, but who am I to say. At the end of the day it’s their property and they have to treat it in the way they think is best.”
