The Crown Season 5 and 6 Filming
The end is less nigh for The Crown than we thought. With an additional season 6 now ordered, the fifth season – which was supposed to film in 2021 and replace Olivia Colman with Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth – will not arrive until 2022, as filming has been delayed. The production postponement is not thought to be connected to pandemic issues.
Creator Peter Morgan previously announced that The Crown would end with season 5 and complete its story on Netflix.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to confirm Imelda Staunton as Her Majesty the The Queen for the fifth and final season, taking The Crown into the 21st century. Imelda is an astonishing talent and will be a fantastic successor to Claire Foy and Olivia Colman,” he said at the time. “At the outset I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons but now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop. I’m grateful to Netflix and Sony for supporting me in this decision.”
But he then quickly reversed his decision, and confirmed that season 6 was in the offing after all. “As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons. To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day — it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”
The Crown Season 5 and 6 Cast
Imelda Staunton is excited about playing the Queen, though it seems it’ll be a couple of years before we’ll be able to see her in action on Netflix.
“I have loved watching The Crown from the very start,” she said. “As an actor it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan’s scripts. I am genuinely honoured to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion.”
Lesley Manville (The Phantom Thread) will also replace Helena Bonham-Carter as Princess Margaret in season 5.
“I could not be happier to be playing Princess Margaret,” Manville gushed. “The baton is being passed on from two formidable actresses, and I really don’t want to let the side down. Furthermore to play siblings with my dear friend Imelda Staunton will be nothing short of a complete joy.”
The Night Manager actress Elizabeth Debicki has been cast as Princess Diana in the fifth and sixth seasons.
“Princess Diana’s spirit, her words and her actions live in the hearts of so many. It is my true privilege and honour to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one,” Debicki said after Netflix made the new casting announcement.
