There’s no shortage of Pride and Prejudice adaptations out there, but it says something that the BBC’s 25-year-old, damp Colin Firth-starring mini-series is still the most well known.
Well now ITV are bringing us their take on the classic Jane Austen story, though it’s claimed this new interpretation will tap into the author’s “darker tones”.
Playwright Nina Raine is adapting the book, and the cast are yet to be confirmed. What we do know, however, is that this is being developed by the same team behind Poldark and Victoria.
Damien Timmer, managing director of Mammoth, told Radio Times: “In this age of the box set – with audiences loving to binge on complex, serialised dramas – it feels absolutely right to reassess the great classics. Every generation needs its own adaptation of this perfect novel.
“Nina raine is one of hte most gifted writers working today and her wit and emotional intelligence make her the perfect match for Jane Austen. She’s a devoted fan of the book, but she’s never seen any previous adaptations – so pleasingly the novel only exists in her imagination.”
