Fans of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale are especially intrigued by what is to come from the TV adaptation’s second season, having left of at the point in which the book left readers hanging.
And so the latest image to surface online has hinted at some of the directions season two may go in, showing Ofglen (Alexis Bledel) at the oft-hinted at but never visited Colonies. The Colonies are where Gilead puts the women who cannot fulfil the roles it defines, leaving them to clean up toxic waste until they inevitably perish from radiation exposure.
Bledel told Entertainment Weekly: “I think it was around the time I was done filming the first season. I was told Emily would be back in season 2… I loved filming Emily’s flashbacks. [Executive producer] Bruce Miller and I had talked about what her pre-Gilead life might have been like even before I started working on the first season.
“I think much of her worldview is informed by her previous life as a professor of cellular biology. Life in the Colonies is a last stop. Emily does not have a great deal of hope for a future there; she knows her days are numbered.”
The Handmaid’s Tale season two premieres on April 25 in the US.
