The pair are joining forces to play a desperate couple in a new comedy drama.
Katherine Ryan made the jump from stand-up to sitcom with The Duchess for Netflix in 2020. Romesh Ranganathan followed suit in 2022 with Avoidance on the BBC.
Now, the pair have jumped together to Sky to play a prospective parents in the comedy drama Romantic Getaway. The story follows the extraordinary lengths they go to in order to fund their IVF treatment.
Here’s the premise for Romantic Getaway:
This six-part modern Bonnie and Clyde story sees couple Alison (Katherine Ryan) and Deacon (Romesh Ranganathan) desperate to have a child. After countless IVF attempts, they are faced with the possibility it might not happen. They are unable to afford more rounds, and with mounting debts the pressure on the relationship begins to show. What is their solution? Steal. Now they must avoid getting caught…
Romantic Getaway is a comedy series beginning directly after Deacon and Alison have defrauded their dodgy boss, Alfie (Johnny Vegas) of £500k. The care sat in their car, buzzing with adrenaline. But after the buzz wears off, they must not only contend with the gruelling process of IVF, but also have to figure out how to use the money without getting found out, a challenge that draws them deep into the criminal underworld of Reading.
The show, which sounds delightfully bonkers to us, comes from Romesh’s own Ranga Bee Productions, which he runs with Benjamin Green. The pair have created and written the show, with additional writing by Sarah Morgan and Elaine Gracie. Shaun Wilson directs, and the producer is Caroline Norris.
Ranganathan, Green and Michelle Farr-Scott are executive producers for Ranga Bee; Anil Gupta and Jon Mountague for Sky Studios.
Romantic Getaway lands at Sky Max and NOW on New Year’s Day 2023. We’ll keep you posted.
