Pump up the tyres on the Mystery Machine and get the snacks in, Scooby-Doo is preparing for new adventures.
News has broken, via The Hollywood Reporter, that Netflix is planning for a live-action version of Hanna-Barbera’s Scooby-Doo.
The classic cartoon franchise, which has endured since 1969, features four young adults and a talking dog who solve mysteries.
Reportedly, the project has a script-to-screen deal: if the streamer approves the script, it will commit to a series without waiting for a pilot episode.
These new live-action exploits will come from the prolific Greg Berlanti, the driving force behind the Arrowverse of DC adaptations. As that has wound down, Berlanti has moved into other areas, including Netflix’s own Dead Boy Detectives and You.
Berlanti will produce, and the writers are Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg (Cowboy Bebop, High Fidelity). Warner Bros. Television, owners of Hannah-Barbera, will produce the series.
Movies
Scooby-Doo has principally remained in the cartoon realm since its creation, evolving with animation styles across the decades. That’s except for a couple of direct-to-television movies and spinoffs.
However, in live action, a pair of big screen adventures are best remembered: 2002’s Scooby-Doo and its 2004 follow-up Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed – both written by James Gunn.
These two outings starred Freddie Prince Jnr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar as Fred and Daphne, with Linda Cardellini as Velma and Matthew Lillard playing Shaggy.
We’ll keep you posted on Netflix’s Scooby-Doo project.
