The series, based on James Clavell’s best-seller, will pick up the story ten years later.
FX have announced that the second season of its critically acclaimed Shōgun will start filming in January 2026.
The series scooped 18 Emmy Awards, including lead actor and actress, as well as a Golden Globe and many more. It was also, apparently, the most-viewed program in FX history (although they’re not putting any numbers on that.)
Designed as a “limited series”, the first season adapted James Clavell’s novel in full. However, FX report that series’ creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks recently wrapped a writers’ room devoted to creating a wholly original new chapter.
For Shōgun season 2, we can expect a time jump…
In the first season, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada) fought for his survival as his enemies in the Council of Regents united against him. When a mysterious European ship was found marooned in a nearby village, its English pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) shared vital strategic secrets with Toranaga that tipped the scales of power in his favor to win a century-defining civil war.
Part two of Shōgun is set ten years after the events of the first season and continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined.
The production has confirmed two of its leads. Hiroyuki Sanada returns to star as Lord Yoshii Toranaga, while Cosmo Jarvis is also back as Blackthorne. Sanada takes an executive producer credit, while Javis is now a co-executive producer. The show comes from FX Productions, with a third season already commissioned too.
We’ll keep you posted on Shōgun season 2.
In the meantime, the first series is available to stream internationally on Disney+.
