Disney+ Star Wars Day fan art takeover 2021

Star Wars Day fan art takeover coming tomorrow — we take a sneak peek

Posted Filed under

Tomorrow (May the Fourth!) is Star Wars Day and this year Disney+ is marking the occasion with a fan art takeover

Disney+ has revealed it will be marking Star Wars Day 2021 with a fan art takeover, the first example is above — it’s by poster illustrator and cover artist Zi Xu. Of course, there’s a lot more going on than that, though we suspect not everything has been revealed.

What is Star Wars Day?

Just in case there’s anyone in a galaxy far, far away who doesn’t know, Star Wars Day is celebrated by fans every year on May the Fourth (as in may the fourth be with you). The phrase has been in currency as far back as 1979, and the event was first formally marked in 2011. Now it’s an opportunity for celebration (and a sales opportunity).

What’s the fan art takeover?

In celebration of the galaxy’s greatest fan holiday, Lucasfilm and The Walt Disney Company have commissioned fan artists from all over the world to create new pieces for Disney+. The artwork celebration will continue on Disney+ from Tuesday, May the 4th, until Saturday, May 9, with more commissioned fan art taking over the landing pages of Star Wars movies and series. That means all nine movies, Rogue One, Solo, The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian.

There’s other things happening (and we imagine we will learn more during the day), including in-game giveaways, and discounts for both modern and classic Star Wars games. Details on that may be found on the Star Wars site. There’s also an official page for the day.

Are you celebrating this May 4th, perhaps with a rewatch of your favourite episode (Empire Strikes Back — other episodes are available)? Let us know in the comments. And remember… Cultbox will always be with you!
