Belgian drama Matrioshki will begin airing in the UK later this month.
The ten-part Belgian drama starts at 10.15pm on Wednesday 30 July on Sky Arts 1.
Matrioshki follows the story of ten young impoverished eastern European women who have been lured to Belgium with the promise of a better life by a ruthless criminal gang. Little do they know, they are about to be forced into a life of prostitution. The police are slow and corrupt and only an ambitious journalist is prepared to risk it all to expose this illegal trade.
In the opening episode, a Belgian mafia gang arrives in Vilnius, Lithuania, and auditions young female dancers in an abandoned theatre. Boss Raymond Van Mechelen asks the chosen few to sign a contract which will give the gang total control over them ahead of a promised tour of Cyprus, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. However, the contract is written in Greek and the girls are unsure what they will have to give up to be part of the dance troupe. But they are desperate for a new life and are unwilling to heed the warnings of Nico Maes, a Belgian journalist who has arrived in town to try to put a stop to the gang’s operation.
Only one girl, Kasandra, takes him seriously and postpones signing the contract. But despite her best efforts, she is unable to prevent the others leaving on a bus out of town the next morning.
