The Edge of Seventeen: TV adaptation pilot ordered

Posted Filed under

YouTube have ordered a pilot episode for a loose adaptation of The Edge of Seventeen, 2016’s acclaimed teen comedy starring Hailee Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson.

While not a direct remake – it’ll merely evoke the original’s tone – the pilot will be executive produced by The Edge of Seventeen‘s director, Kelly Fremon Craig. Writing and directing duties will, instead, be handed to Annabel Oakes, who’s worked on Transparent and Atypical.

It’s described as “a witty coming of age series, which will subvert standard teen show tropes while following a high-school student and her best friend as they navigate the relationships, feelings, and realities of being a teenage girl”. Currently there’s no cast but filming will start in January.

On the pilot, Craig said, “Annabel is an extraordinary writer with a voice like nobody else’s. She’s created a new set of characters so full of truth, humor, and specificity, I’ve fallen completely in love with them. For all of the reasons she makes an exceptional writer, she will make an exceptional director. I couldn’t be more thrilled to support her talent and help her bring this to life.”

The Edge of Seventeen is expected to air on YouTube in 2019.

We’ll pass on more information as and when we get it.
