The Witcher season 2 official trailer is out — we’ve taken a look (OK several) and we’re impressed
First a reminder of season 1. Geralt (Henry Cavill) is a Witcher (a human changed by magic to fight with mystic skills). There are several kingdoms, wars and magic a-plenty. Geralt’s fate is tied to princess Ciri (Freya Allan) and he is in love with powerful sorceress Yennefer (Anya Chalotra). Geralt is sometimes assisted by Dandelion (Joey Batey) the Bard, and MyAnna Buring plays another sorceress.
The season ended with a massive battle in which it is believed Yennefer died channeling vast powers, and Geralt meeting up with Ciri.
Here’s the Netflix summary of season 2:
Convinced Yennefer’s life was lost at the Battle of Sodden, Geralt of Rivia brings Princess Cirilla to the safest place he knows, his childhood home of Kaer Morhen. While the Continent’s kings, elves, humans and demons strive for supremacy outside its walls, he must protect the girl from something far more dangerous: the mysterious power she possesses inside…
As the trailer makes clear, all the main character survive, though we have no evidence of Geralt being reunited with Yennefer. What we do have is a strong sense this season looks better than season 1. There seems evidence of more money, more detailed costumes, even slicker CGI and (maybe) a more linear story-telling. Ciri seems older (and she was very much a sheltered teenage princess) and time as well as experience extract their tolls. Geralt is no less moody and the magical creature even more unsettling than before. We hope for some revelations, as well as more being saved for season 3.
Season 2 arrives on Netflix on December 17 and you can see the Witcher season 2 official trailer now.
