Michelle Gomez responds to LGBTQ+ fan concerns

Michelle Gomez responded to fan reactions regarding her upcoming role as Professor Minerva McGonagall in a new Harry Potter audiobook series.

While the famous Scottish actress would seem an inspired choice to take over the role from the late Maggie Smith, fans have concerns over her participation a project which would further enrich J. K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter novels.

Rowling has spent money from her own fortune in support of groups and initiatives that advocate for what they describe as “sex-based rights,” which critics characterise as anti-transgender causes. She has funded legal actions challenging policies related to single-sex spaces which include transgender women. Rowling has been vocal about her gender-critical views on transgender people and related civil rights since 2020.

Doctor Who fans in particular have expressed disappointment in Gomez’s decision to participate in the audiobooks. Doctor Who has a large large LGBTQ+ fanbase. Since 2014, Gomez has fascinated and delighted fans with her portrayal of the chaotic Missy, an incarnation of the Doctor’s nemesis The Master. She has also delighted and entertained fans the world over with her participation in conventions.

Gomez issued this statement on an Instagram story:

“To my LGBTQ+ fans, and especially the trans community: I want to speak directly to the concerns that have been raised about my involvement in this project. I hear you, and I understand why this is painful for many. I want to be clear that I stand with trans people, and I support trans rights – fully and without hesitation.

When I accepted this role, I did so as someone who has always loved the stories and what they meant to so many – especially those who found comfort and identity in that world. I now understand more clearly how deeply complicated and hurtful this association can feel, and I take that seriously. Being an ally means listening even when it’s uncomfortable and taking accountability where it’s needed. I’m committed to doing both.”

In her subsequent story, she posted her contribution to a LGBTQ+ health charity.

Missing from her message is a pledge to discontinue her participation in the audiobooks, though that may not be contractually possible. Also missing was a pledge to contribute her earnings from the audiobook series to trans causes. So far, Gomez is only found accountable in the loss of reputation among trans fans and their allies.

It’s worth noting that, among all the famous people whose names are attached to the audiobooks, including Hugh Laurie, Matthew Macfadyen, Riz Ahmed and Cush Jumbo, Michelle Gomez is the only one to address trans concerns regarding the project.

A previous series of Harry Potter audiobooks was narrated by Stephen Fry, who has since criticised J.K. Rowling for saying “things that are really cruel, wrong and mocking” regarding transwomen.

While Michelle Gomez’s choice to communicate in the form of an Instagram story means that her message will disappear 24 hours after first posted, the struggle for trans rights will continue.
