The series explores the explosive and thrilling music scene in the Midlands in the 1980s. 

The BBC has dropped the trailer for Steven Knight’s This Town.

The six-part series. set in 1981, follows a group of young people at a time of huge social tension. The drama show them fighting to choose their own paths in life, each in need of the second chance that music offers.

This Town has a large cast lead by Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Nicholas Pinnock (Marcella), David Dawson (The Last Kingdom).

They star alongside the rising talents of Levi Brown (Loss and Return), Jordan Bolger (The Book of Boba Fett), Ben Rose (Line of Duty), Eve Austin (You), Freya Parks (Here We Go) and Shyvonne Ahmmad (Annika).

The wider ensemble also includes Geraldine James, Peter McDonald, John Heffernan, Stefan Asante-Boateng, Séainín Brennan, George Somner and Brendan Gibson.

This Town is co-produced with Mercury Studios, with producer Dan Carey, musician, novelist and poet Kae Tempest and singer-songwriter ESKA writing the songs performed by the band in the series.

Contemporary Covers

Additionally, six contemporary artists – Celeste, Gregory Porter, Olivia Dean, Ray Laurél, Sekou and Self Esteem – have each recorded a cover version for the end credits of an episode.

The series comes from Kudos (a Banijay UK company) and Nebulastar for the BBC, co-produced with Mercury Studios, in association with Kudos North and Stigma Films.

This Town‘s creator, writer and executive producer is Steven Knight. The director is Paul Whittington and the producers are Tim Whitby and Charlotte Surtees.

It was filmed on location in Birmingham, and at Knight’s new Digbeth Loc. Film and TV Studios.

This Town lands in full on BBC iPlayer at 6am on Sunday, March 31st. It also begins its BBC One airing at 9pm that day, with episode 2 following at the same time on Monday, April 1st. Weekly episodes then follow on Sunday nights.
