Doctor Who Am I – documentary film to premiere at Sci-Fi London

The film follows TV Movie writer Matthew Jacobs as he heads into American fandom.

The documentary film Doctor Who Am I will premiere at the Sci-Fi London Festival. Following Matthew Jacobs, writer of the 1996 Doctor Who TV Movie, it sees him re-engage with Doctor Who fandom.

The TV Movie, a US/UK co-production which launched Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor, met with limited success stateside on broadcast. In the UK, it gathered a respectable audience of 9.87 million viewers on BBC One.

The documentary has been in gestation for some time, with Jacobs referencing it on his blog back in February 2015.

Here’s the synopsis:

Documentary filmmaker, Vanessa Yuille (in her debut feature) follows friend and co-director, Matthew Jacobs (British writer of the 1996 TV movie, Doctor Who) as he is reluctantly pulled back into the fandom that rejected his work 25 years earlier.

The journey not only becomes hilarious and emotionally perilous for the duo but also reveals a touching and quirky face-off between the American Doctor Who fans and Matthew himself.

As they explore the fandom, Matthew unexpectedly finds himself a kindred part of this close-knit, yet vast, family of fans. The documentary deals with the desire to belong to a community, and how people can become nourished and enriched by the experience.

From the trailer, it looks like the 80 minute film offers personal insights into the writing of the TV Movie. It also features Paul McGann, Daphne Ashbrook and a whole host of cosplaying American fans. Sci-Fi London have confirmed that Matthew Jacobs and Vanessa Yuille will be attending the screening.
