Catherine Tate plays multiple characters behind the walls of a women’s prison.
With less than three weeks to go, we have a first taste of life on the inside with Catherine Tate.
In her first show for the Netflix, Tate plays six characters within the walls of HMP Woldsley, including the Governor, a guard and four different prisoners. The show has a mockumentary style, following the inmates as they rehearse for a musical production.
Here’s the show’s blurb from the streamer:
Events planner-turned-women’s prison governor Laura Willis documents the thrills and spills of life behind bars in this delightfully dry comedy series.
The musical initiative comes from modernising Governor Laura Willis who is seeking to change women’s prisons. She’s convinced staging musicals will validate her belief that creativity leads to rehabilitation.
In the promo, we get a look at the other people in the show too; As well as those half a dozen Catherine Tate characters, the show also stars Christian Brassington, Niky Wardley, Lorna Brown, Caroline Harding, Jola Olajide and Duncan Wisbey. Additionally, former EastEnder Cheryl Fergison appears (possibly as herself?)
Tate writes the show and directs along with James Kayler. Of course, she’s no stranger to the mockumentary format, having starred in the US version of The Office.
Hard Cell will have six 30-minute episodes and launches on Netflix on the 12th of April.
