‘My Mad Fat Diary’ Season 3 Episode 2 review: Heartbreaking

Posted Filed under

Oh come on, My Mad Fat Diary!

Rae doesn’t deserve this. She deserves a nice cup of tea and a cupcake and for everything to go rather quite a lot better than everything does in this episode.

After last week’s car crash, Chloe’s parents ask Rae not to visit her in hospital, because what Rae really needs is a heaping dose of grown-up-induced guilt, folks. It’s so easy to understand why Rae feels like crap.

Later, further proof that some grown-ups totally suck is none other than Rae’s dad, who gets rather the wrong idea from a talk at the record store and drunkenly crashes his ex-wife’s birthday party. Not cool.

My Mad Fat Diary Series 2 big

It’s heartbreaking to see Rae’s actions – with the very best of intentions – either rebuffed, in the case of her mixtape for Chloe, or culminating in disaster, with her attempt at sitting Chloe’s exam for her. And then, when she attempts to reconnect with Finn, she finds she’s been beaten to it by her erstwhile prospective Bristol-buddy, Katie Springer. Oh, and her therapist Kester doesn’t work there anymore.

And so, in spite of pep talks from Chloe and mum, Rae misses sitting her English exam due to a totally justifiable meltdown. It’s painful stuff to watch. I watched in cringing discomfort and tears forming at the corners of my eyes. It’s hard to watch it and not remember exactly how that kind of panic and desperation feels, if you’ve ever felt it yourself.

You just want so much for things to be okay, and they’re not right now. With only one episode still remaining, gosh, I hope they will be.
