‘The Get Down’ review: Have Netflix done it again?

Posted Filed under

When it comes to creating captivating original content, Netflix have been on a serious roll as of late.

They have produced hit after hit, from documentary Making a Murderer to the retro Stranger Things, building on the successes of the already ridiculously popular House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.

And it is for good reason too, as the streaming colossus has invested billions into its new shows.

The Get Down – Has it replicated the magic?

The Get Down is a story about a group of teenagers living in the Bronx area of New York during the 1970s. In reality though, this is more like a time warp into the 70s, to a time where New York was beaten down and broken. And through that, like the glittering lights of Casino, there came a rise in culture, music and art. We are talking about real Casino, not usual for us online games. However, there is good one called Apnet – Casino.

How this time period has been depicted on screen in this series is a thing of beauty. The music is from more of the hip-hop genre, but by no means should you let this put you off watching it. Scenes change from Soho to Studio 54 –even the newly built (at the time) World Trade Centre makes an appearance.

Ten years in the making

With episodes ranging from 53 to 93 minutes long, this 6-part series has been 10 years in the making, according to Executive Producer Baz Luhrmann. First announced in February of 2015, Luhrmann had spent about a decade developing the concept first.

Actors that are relatively unknown were cast in the main parts, and rappers NAS, Kurtis Blow and Grandmaster Flash were called in to provide a “Boot Camp” of sorts to the actors, in order to educate them to the ways of hip hop, and what it was like during that time period.

Season 2 looming

One of the best things about Netflix is, generally, all of the episodes are available from the start, allowing you to binge on an entire series, should you want to.

This is also the case with The Get Down with all six episodes being available to watch back to back. And a second season (also likely 6 parts) is due to arrive in 2017. Given that the budget for this show is an estimated $120 million, it is certain that great things can also be expected of season 2.

Should you watch it?

Of course! This show is the most perfect mix of music, scenery, art and history that you can imagine. You really do not have to be a rap fan to enjoy what is occurring on screen either. Episodes are short enough for you to enjoy the whole thing in one sitting (with the exception of that one 93 min long one), and when you have finished the show, you will be hoping for more to come.

Fans of the hit show are hoping that 2017 rolls around quickly so that they can get their next instalment of action.
