Welcome to the Podcast Roundup for August 2022 – our favourites in the worlds of CultBox.
Our picks this month, in no particular order, are…
Back to One #217 – Adrian Pasdar
Peter Rinaldi talks to actor Adrian Pasdar (Heroes, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) about his career and his acting process. It’s an entertaining affair with impressively starry anecdotes including Frank Sinatra and Gregory Peck.
Full Disclosure with James O’Brien S2 #103 – John Cleese
The LBC host enjoys an hour in the company of comedy legend John Cleese, talking Monty Python and more. The chat covers ex-wives, those Python reunion shows at the O2 and insights into their writing process. There’s also talk of the importance of taking breaks when being creative and keeping up the momentum when heading into the absurd.
The Doctor Who Show – The List Makers: Top Target Novels
The Doctor Who Show‘s quickie podcast, The List Makers, saw the two hosts run down their favourite Doctor Who Target novelisations. It was an interesting discussion, taking in Ian Marter’s sometimes overlooked additions to the range and Virgin Books editor Peter Darvill-Evans’ wider contributions to the universe of Doctor Who. All of which provoked some excellent reading/re-reading suggestions.
Also, released late for our last roundup, July’s monthly edition of the show looked at the work of Hartnell-era writer Dennis Spooner with guest host Dylan Rees.
Real Dictators – Napoleon Bonaparte
Paul McGann’s ongoing history podcast has begun a fascinating six-part dive into the rise and fall of the Emperor of the French, Napoleon Bonaparte.
The Big Finish Podcast – Ninth UFO
Outgoing Senior Producer David Richardson joined Nick and Benji to list ten pivotal productions from his 15 year tenure. He makes diverse choices across the breath of the audio production company’s output.
Who Corner to Corner Ep 47 – Steve Cole
The C2C guys talk to author and editor Steve Cole about his work and the wider world of tie-in books. It’s an illuminating chat, covering topics such as Doctor Who novels by actors and the Time Lord Victorious multi-platform story.
The conversation also includes Steve’s memories of seeing early Eccleston rushes and how the show referenced his tie-in novel. Plus, there’s talk of writing for that other great British institution (Young) James Bond.
Film Stories with Simon Brew
This month, Simon delved into the tales behind Gone Girl, A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, Broken Arrow, Sleeping with the Enemy, The Hateful Eight and The Jewel in the Nile.
Additionally, the Film Stories feed dropped a fascinating interview with director John Madden reflecting on the release of Operation Mincemeat. The conversation also takes in Madden’s other work, such as the unlikely paring of Judi Dench and Billy Connolly for Mrs Brown.
So, happy listening… and do let us know if you have any recommendations too.
