Following the first episode’s exploits, complete with an angry ghost and his deadly belt, the adventures at the former Bedlam Heights apartment complex have become a lot more sinister.
Despite dispatching the aforementioned spirit, newcomers Ellie (Lacey Turner) and Max (Jack Roth) have yet another pasty-faced and volatile former patient to deal with, and this time the ghost has managed to latch on to Cass (former Skins star Kathryn Prescott), a professional swimmer and new resident at Brightmoor.
Cass’ daily swims in Brightmoor’s newly refurbished swimming pool – under the supervision of her trainer and lover, Dominic (Sam Robertson), a former commonwealth swimmer – have led to some odd goings on in the water, and the appearance of a territorial spirit (Gemita Samarra) that, as usual, only Ellie can see. But the spirit’s appearances quickly become more menacing, and before long Ellie becomes convinced that Cass is in danger and the only way to keep her safe is to keep her away from the pool. A difficult task, considering Cass’ vocation, and the ongoing pressure from Dominic, which unsurprisingly proves impossible for Cass, who attempts to escape her own personal demons in the water, but instead meets something altogether more deadly.
While Ellie battles with another wraith, the glowing girl and her black marbles make a few more appearances, and she hangs around just long enough to inform her that her name is Eve (Sydney Wade). Ghosts and ghoulies aside, salesman Dan continues his quest to become the sleaziest man in Bedlam Heights by spending his time strutting around in a towel, and trying to snare the anonymous creator of the Bedlam Watch blog. The fact that he’s unaware that it’s Max, his own flatmate, suggests that this quest may take some time.
Meanwhile, Kate’s disappearance remains unnoticed by everyone, and Warren (Hugo Speer) is continuing to sleepwalk and have nightmares featuring the Branded Man (Tam Dean Burn). In fact, the only person who seems unaffected by Brightmoor’s colourful past is Kiera (Gemma Chan), who continues her mission to be pretty, date an older man, and generally be a bit of a bore.
So, while the ghost in the pool is the crux of the episode, Bedlam’s latest wet and wild ghost is more of a precursor to the series’ main baddie, the omnipresent and ever-watching Branded Man. But, for now, he remains in the shadows, and the few shots we see of him are infuriatingly brief. Until he’s unmasked we will have to make do with the growing attraction between the headstrong medium, Ellie, and her overly-accommodating bartender – and for the time being – friend, Max.
So, what next for Bedlam? Who is Eve? Will slow Dan catch Max the blogger? And will we ever find out what happened to Ryan? Only time will tell…
