While attending a policing conference, Wallander is drawn into the case of a missing Swedish national in Cape Town.

He finds himself on a physical and emotional journey that will lead him from the aching beauty and open spaces of rural Africa to the intense poverty and deprivation of its urban townships, and finally bring him face to face with an individual who has not only lost hope in their country but betrayed everything they once believed in.

Alongside, and in contrast to this, the relationships that Wallander forms on his journey – with Grace Thembu, a cop and a single mother, and Mabasha, a young man driven to a life of crime – will help him come to terms with his own doubts about modern Sweden and serve to rekindle his belief in the value of his 40 years as a policeman.

Wallander and his colleagues discover a middle-aged woman’s body half-buried in the forest swamp. As they search the victim’s home, it becomes clear there has been an intruder – and more disturbingly, that the victim’s teenage daughter is missing.

The search for the missing girl leads Wallander down a treacherous path, towards some bikers who have been causing a stir in the local area. Wallander feels increasingly threatened by one of them in particular and begins to suspect that he’s being followed.

The return of a long-lost love provides Wallander with a much-needed distraction, but, just as we think Wallander may finally prioritise his personal life, an unexpected shadow starts to haunt him…#

As the case takes a devastating turn, Wallander must delve deeper into Cold War politics and, in doing so, uncovers fractured familial relationships within the Von Enkes.

He begins to wonder whether the answer may lie closer to home. With time running out, our hero must prevail against the odds if he is to safeguard his daughter’s future.
