In July 2001, the first teaser trailer for Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man was released to cinemas. By the time the film itself appeared a year later, the promo had long since been withdrawn and none of the footage it contained was apparent anywhere in the finished movie.

Why? Well, according to distributors Sony, the sequence was never intended to be a part of the film in the first place (whether this is true, we’ll never know for certain) but in any case, subsequent tragic events in the real world rendered what was actually a fairly tepid trailer – albeit with a very cool and would-be iconic image at the end – unusable…
