Aquaman: Julie Andrews has a secret role

In some rather unexpected news Mary Poppins star and all-round legend Julie Andrews has booked a role in DC’s upcoming tentpole, Aquaman

Andrews is set to star as underwater beastie the Karathen that apparently holds the key to unite Arthur Curry’s two worlds, Atlantis and the surface. It will be another voice role for Andrews who has popped up in the Shrek and Despicable Me franchise these last few years.

“We wanted the Karathen to have the voice of a classic British actress, albeit somewhat digitally altered,” said producer Peter Safran on the casting. “And when we found out Julie was interested and available and excited to do it, casting her was a no-brainer.”

It’s a fascinating piece of casting because Aquaman is set to go toe to toe against Mary Poppins Returns, which Andrews declined to star in so she didn’t pull focus from Emily Blunt’s new incarnation of the famous nanny.

Regarding the coincidence Safran joked, “Who knew that Aquaman would have the real Mary Poppins this Christmas?”
