Chewing Gum series 3 is happening; writers room hired

Despite earlier reports that Michaela Coel’s comedy Chewing Gum was dead, the actress/writer/comedian has now revealed that not only is a third series happening, but she is bringing in a writer’s room.

Coel was the sole writer on the sitcom’s first two series, and now she’s ready to open up her process a little.

“[It’s] because I don’t want to die. My sets are not peaceful. It’s a beautiful catastrophe. I am running around like a headless chicken. I don’t sleep because I am writing. It’s manic. I love it — I don’t know if I would want it any other way, but I’ve learnt from working with proper people like Charlie [Brooker, who she worked with on Black Mirror series 4]; they really prepare in advance.”

No word yet on when we can expect new episodes to emerge.

23/08/2017: Strange, inventive and original shows don’t tend to last long on traditional television, and Channel 4’s Chewing Gum has become the latest to wave goodbye as creator and star Michaela Coel announces its end.

A third series of the comedy won’t be moving forward, it’s been confirmed, despite critical acclaim both here and in the US.

On Twitter, Coel wrote: “Thank you to all of you. Chewing Gum has been amazing and it’s only the beginning, more stories to tell, and my latter will be greater.”

In an official statement, Channel 4 added: “Chewing Gum is a vibrant, hilarious and unique comedy of which we are incredibly proud. Though there currently aren’t any plans for a third series, we hope to work with the hugely talented Michaela Coel again soon.”
