One thing that’s often said of the Doctor Who role is that when you have it, you’re constantly asked when you’re leaving. When you leave it, you’re constantly asked when you’re coming back.
And so it begins for Peter Capaldi, who leaves the TARDIS this Christmas in Twice Upon A Time. He’ll regenerate into Jodie Whittaker in the show, and his tenure as the Doctor will be over.
But could he be tempted back for a future episode? Perhaps in a multi-Doctor story at some point?
“I’m sure if it was right, if I thought the material was right, and it was the right time to do it”, he admitted to Digital Spy. “I love Doctor Who, so it’s great to be in it”, he said, adding “when you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go and leave it behind and let it get on with itself”.
Teasingly, he added that “maybe in some years’ time, I could pop up again. I’m quite happy to do that”, adding that “it has to be special” for it to happen.
All eyes, then, on a 60th anniversary special in six years’ time perhaps? We wait and see…
