Launching the fifth series of Merlin at a press event last week, attended by CultBox, the show’s executive producers revealed that an endgame has been in place “almost since the beginning”, with Johnny Capps confirming that “it’s always been about the end”.
“We were talking about Arthur’s death in Episode 8, Series 1,” pointed out Julian Murphy. “The thing is, there’s something about this legend that works because it failed. They did create this Camelot, and it failed. It always carries that – as a myth, as a story, as a culture – and we can’t really run away from it, but how long we get there, how long it takes, is [more fluid].”
Both remained tight-lipped about the show’s future. “Our heads are so in Season 5 at the moment that we can’t really focus on anything else,” said Capps. “We’re still shooting – Julian and I have just run from the edit now. So there’s a lot going on. I think once we’ve finished editing, and we’re up and transmitting, I’m sure we’ll be getting into those discussions.”
