There’s another massive year coming as Jodie Whittaker joins Big Finish to lead her own series of Thirteenth Doctor audio dramas in 2025.
Producers Big Finish celebrated twenty-five years of making official Doctor Who audio dramas in 2024.
However, they’ve no signs of slowing down with a packed schedule for the year ahead. Here are a few releases that have caught our eye…
The Thirteenth Doctor Adventures
In July, Jodie Whittaker will return to her role as the Thirteenth Doctor. Although it feels like she barely left the role, ‘The Power of the Doctor’ aired in October 2022 and actually wrapped filming in late 2021. Previously, Big Finish have granted a new life to Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth Doctor, so we can’t wait to see where they take her!
Jodie Whittaker is joined by her faithful companion Yazmin Khan (Mandip Gill) for bi-monthly adventures, with the series set to run into 2027.
The Fifth Doctor Adventures – Hooklight
Master storyteller Tim Foley turns his attentions to the Season 19 TARDIS team for a 12-part epic released across two-box sets.
Hooklight is described as a vast, multi-layered story spans different planets and times, introducing a galaxy of new characters and monsters.
There is a light that must never be lit…
When the TARDIS runs aground in the ancient realm of Morning, the Doctor learns that a powerful force has reemerged. A lamp filled with a mythical substance known as Hooklight has been discovered – and this could mean the end of everything.
A great quest begins against the forces of chaos, encompassing many new friends and foes. Without their ship and without each other, the time travellers will be tested on their journey to the Dark Forge. And not everyone will survive…
Hooklight begins in April.
Doctor Who – The Lost Stories – Genesis of the Cybermen
The early Big Finish adventure ‘Spare Parts’ gave us a brilliant Cyber origin story that has inspired television episodes in the modern era.
However, their co-creator Gerry Davis had his own plans, which were submitted but never got on screen. This tale develops them into a 4-part audio drama for Peter Davison’s Doctor which is released in March.
A King lies dying in his castle. His eldest son Prince Sylvan is an artist with no desire to inherit a kingdom, while Prince Dega toils in his laboratory, dedicated to saving their dying people from extinction. They will all burn unless he succeeds.
When the TARDIS arrives, its crew believe they can help. But this planet is Mondas. And this is the Genesis of the Cybermen…
The Fugitive Doctor
We enjoyed a taste of Jo Martin’s Doctor in ‘Coda – The Final Act’, part of the 60th anniversary mini-series Once and Future, but January sees her rightfully placed centre stage.
Most Wanted is the first of two releases this year and includes an inevitable clash with the Daleks. Swift on her heels is a solo series for Sacha Dhawan’s take on the Doctor’s best frenemy too – Call Me Master.
The Life and Death of River Song: Ace and Tegan
The adventures of Professor River Song continue in March with continue, with the Doctor’s wife leading a four-parter starring both Ace and Tegan.
The story takes inspiration from where we last saw both former companions onscreen, working for Kate Stewart…
Ace and Tegan have been plucked from their twenty-first century lives and stranded in 1860. But who is responsible, and why is River Song mixing in nineteenth century society too?
Somebody is out to eliminate the three of them, as Ace and Tegan realise that this may not be their first meeting with River. Their lives are entangled, and to escape, somebody must pay the ultimate price…
Written by the killer combination of James Moran and Roland Moore, it’s out in March.
Zygon Century
It’s not just the Doctors, as two alien species are getting their moment in the sun this year too. Zygon Century begins in January, kicking of a series for the shape-changing species which first appeared opposite Tom Baker.
The Zygons have come to claim the Earth, and this time they’re playing the long game. For the Black Cadre have a plan, a plan that will take exactly one hundred years to come to fruition. Prepare yourselves… the Zygon Century has begun!
The first boxset, Infiltration, features Michael Troughton playing his version of the Second Doctor in one of the three tales.
Planet Krynoid
Fellow Fourth Doctor-era nasty the Krynoids are also getting their own series too. Away from Earth, Nightfall sees them at work on an alien planet in a three-part drama.
For a hundred years, Sunlight has been a beacon of hope shining across a troubled galaxy, an artificial paradise on a frozen world offering safe haven for the super-rich, and employment for even the poorest of labourers. At least, that’s what the adverts say.
Unfortunately for Governor Robert Hodan, one of his engineers has just discovered a pair of strange-looking pods lodged in a satellite. So Sunlight, that glittering verdant oasis, will never be the same again.
Because, as the Doctor knows only too well, on planets where the Krynoid gets established, the vegetation eats the animals…
The series stars Reece Shearsmith (Inside No. 9). Plus, we can expect the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) to put in an appearance too. The action on Planet Krynoid begins in April.
Honourable Mentions
As well as the above, there’s the continuation of the Dark Gallifrey saga to look forward. The first of two box sets for 2025 features Missy and promises a guest appearance from the Seventh Doctor.
Away from the Whoniverse, Big Finish have also recently announced an audio reimagining of the classic 80s alien invasion series V too.
All of the above 2025 Doctor Who audio dramas are available for pre-order from the Big Finish website.
