Catherine Tate and Philip Glenister join David Walliams’ ‘Big School’ sitcom

The six-part comedy series about “a dysfunctional staff room, unrequited love and interactive white boards” is written by Walliams with The Dawson Brothers.

Doctor Who’s Catherine Tate will play the school’s enthusiastic new recruit, Miss Postern – who despite being a French teacher has never actually been to France – while Life on Mars star Philip Glenister plays the lothario gym teacher Mr Gunn.

Other cast members include Frances de la Tour (Rising Damp) as headmistress Ms Baron, Joanna Scanlan (Getting On) as drama teacher Mrs Klebb, Steve Speirs (Extras) as geography teacher Mr Barber, Daniel Rigby (Black Mirror) as music teacher Mr Martin, and Walliams himself as chemistry teacher Mr Church.

Mark Freeland, BBC head of In-house Comedy, comments: “Led by David Walliams, it’s an absolute privilege to work with such a brilliant cast and off-screen production team. Like my Latin GCSE, nothing can go wrong. At least that’s what I thought at the time.”

Directed by Tony Dow (Only Fools And Horses, Nighty Night), filming will begin next month in the Greater London area.
