Let’s take a look at the Doctor Who spin-offs that never were…
Rose Tyler: Earth Defence
After her heart-breaking exit from the show in ‘Doomsday’, Rose Tyler just kept coming back. It turns out she could even have had her own series as well.
Rose Tyler: Earth Defence would have followed Rose’s adventures in Pete’s World, perhaps working with the parallel Torchwood. A 90-minute special was planned, the idea being that it would be an annual event. A budget was even set in place before Davies pulled the plug, deciding that it was “a spin-off too far” and that “it spoils Doctor Who if we can see that [Rose’s] life continues to be as exciting without the Doctor.”
Darn you, Davies, you big spoilsport.
Young Doctor Who
If you liked that scene in the barn in ‘Listen’, then this is the unmade Doctor Who spin-off that will interest you the most.
Back when CBBC first asked Russell T Davies to make a show for them, they suggested the idea of a prequel series; one that would follow the adventures of the Doctor as a boy. Davies didn’t take to the idea, later saying: “somehow, the idea of a fourteen-year-old Doctor, on Gallifrey inventing sonic screwdrivers, takes away from the mystery and intrigue of who he is and where he came from.”
Instead, he had a think and came up with The Sarah Jane Adventures. But, now that we have sort of seen the Doctor as a boy, maybe someone else will take up the idea in future?
Who knows…?
