As anticipation builds for the return of Doctor Who next month, the BBC has now released two epic trailers for the new season.

While we count down the days until Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman are back as the Doctor and Clara on Saturday 19 September on BBC One, CultBox has pored over the official footage that’s been unveiled so far to pick out all the references and potential callbacks to classic Doctor Who that we can find…

 

Skaro

There’s no denying that the city seen in the first trailer looks very similar to the Dalek city on Skaro from 1963’s ‘The Daleks’ story.

And looking inside the city, don’t those doorway shapes look rather familiar too?

 

Kaaaaarn!

We know that Clare Higgins is back in Season 9’s opening two-parter and, while her character has not been confirmed, she previously played Ohila – a member of the Sisterhood of Karn – in 2013’s ‘The Night of the Doctor’.

This robed figure by a lake certainly suggests that we could be returning to Karn.

When it was announced that Michelle Gomez was returning in Season 9, she was quoted as saying, “I’m positively dying to see the Doctor again!” – and it’s certainly true that the Master is constantly dodging death. So might it be Missy needing the Sisterhood’s regeneration-boosting science this time?
