10 of the TARDIS’s best moments in ‘Doctor Who’

Posted Filed under

The Doctor’s TT Type 40 capsule, or his “frankly magnificent timeship”, is as central to the show as the Time Lord himself.

Here CultBox takes a look at some great TARDIS moments…

‘Utopia’

Doctor Who Utopia John Simm

Attempting to reject the temporal abomination of Captain Jack, the TARDIS flew to towards the end of human history trying to shake him off.

While there and assisting the last vestiges of humanity, Martha accidently reawakens the Master’s sense of self prompting a drop of murder, regeneration from the tremendously evil Derek Jacobi into the unbalanced John Simm, and his stealing of the TARDIS. What became of his own ship, if it survived the Time War, remains open to question.

Under the Master’s influence, albeit time locked between the present day and the time of Utopia, the ship is bastardised and put to nefarious purposes maintaining a temporal paradox.

‘Frontios’

Doctor Who Frontios

Drifting to the edge of Time Lord influence, the TARDIS is forced down in a meteor storm and then the unthinkable happens: the ship is destroyed!

Looking as though they might be stranded forever, the Doctor, Tegan and Turlough get involved in the colony’s desperate struggle for survival from threats both above and below. Eventually the Doctor harnesses the both the greed and gravitational forces of the Tractators to pull his ship back together.

‘The End of Time: Part Two’

Doctor Who David Tennant regeneration

After the Tenth Doctor’s final adventure, the ship seemed to explode in sympathy with him as he finally allowed the radiation to ravage his body and prompt his regeneration. The resulting release of energy not only shattered the windows but also set the console room alight and sent a support column crashing down onto the console.

Carrying on into ‘The Eleventh Hour’ in a thrillingly madcap sequence, it spins out of control and heads for a crash landing. Shooting across the London skyline and nearly losing its pilot out the door, the ship finally makes a heavy landing in the garden of a certain young Amelia Pond… where the magic began all over again.
