Top 10 heartbreaking moments in Steven Moffat’s ‘Doctor Who’ era

Posted Filed under

We take a look at ten of the most heartbreaking moments so far in the Moffat era…

2) “I just wanted to say…. hello.”

Doctor Who The Doctor's Wife

The TARDIS has been the Doctor’s only constant companion in all his many years of travel through time and space, and in Neil Gaiman’s sublime ‘The Doctor’s Wife’ he finally gets to ‘meet’ her and have a bit of a chat, in the scatty form of Idris.

The TARDIS turns out to be every bit as wonderful and batty as you’d expect, but all too soon the body will die and she will go back to being the Doctor’s ship.

It’s Smith’s raw emotion as he speaks to Idris for the last time that really sells this moment.

1) “To me, Van Gogh is the finest painter of them all.”

Doctor who Vincent and the Doctor

‘Vincent and the Doctor’ is just beautiful, with some lovely evocations of Van Gogh’s work, but the clear stand out, tear-demanding moments occur near the end, as first Vincent is brought to a modern day exhibition of his work to see and hear just how much he is admired, beloved and remembered.

And then the kicker. It doesn’t change a darn thing. He will still take his own life.

Oh, and normally I’d balk at the inclusion of a sappy Athlete song, fairly screaming at us to cry, but this time it had its evil way with me. Wonderful.
