‘Sapphire and Steel’ fantasy casting: Who should star in the new remake?

Posted Filed under

Let’s take a look at who – if anyone – could replace the show’s original mighty leads with some fantasy casting suggestions of our own…

Lee Ingleby

Our Zoo Lee Ingleby 2

Perhaps best known for his roles in BBC One’s Inspector George Gently and Our Zoo, Lee has appeared in slew of shows including Life on Mars, Hustle and Being Human. If the new production team were to break away from the received pronunciation of the original series, then Ingleby would fit the bill. A consummate actor who deserves a shot at a big sci-fi franchise, pairing him with Karen Gillian would certainly shake things up.

Colin Firth

Kingsman Colin Firth

With Firth indicating he’d be up for a role in Doctor Who, perhaps the Oscar winning actor is a secret UK telefantasy fan! Could Sapphire and Steel tempt him back to UK TV? A double-act with the aforementioned Keeley Hawes could be dynamite.

Michael Sheen

Masters of Sex Michael Sheen

The Welsh actor best known for his uncanny portrayals of former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair possesses all the attributes required to fill the shoes of David McCallum. A fan of Doctor Who, as a 10 year old he could have easily thrilled to the adventures of Sapphire and Steel as well. Worth a punt.

Chiwetel Ejiofor

Chiwetel Ejiofor

One can dream. Following his main villain role in Joss Whedon’s big screen Firefly outing, Serenity, Ejiofor has largely kept away from overtly sci-fi roles. We did say fantasy casting.

Christopher Eccleston

Safe House Christopher Eccleston

Well, he has helped to successfully relaunch one UK based sci-fi franchise already! Perhaps a limited series of six episodes would appeal to an actor who never seems to remain in one role for too long. He would be fantastic… sorry.
