No Game of Thrones season is complete without a few shocks along the way.
Here we count down Season 5’s most shocking moments…
8. Shireen’s sacrifice
Stannis Baratheon had never been one to let family stand in the way of his ambitions after coldly dispatching younger brother, Renly in Season 2.
However, the increasingly grumpy would-be King had shown uncharacteristic love and kindness to his only daughter and so it was a jaw-dropping moment when Stannis agreed to sacrifice her as Melisandre had instructed. Tied to a stake, Shireen begged her father to reconsider but Stannis was resolute and his daughter’s screams filled the air as the flames consumed her body.
9. Sansa’s rape
One of the most controversial scenes in Game of Thrones this year saw the brutal rape of Sansa Stark by the villainous Ramsay Bolton.
Stunned by the disturbing scenes, many viewers were left wondering if the show had finally gone too far.
10. Jon is betrayed
No one saw this coming. In the closing moments of Season 5, Olly tricked Jon into believing one of the Wildlings knew the whereabouts of his missing uncle, Benjen Stark. Led by Aliser Thorne to a gathering of their Black Brothers, Jon found only a sign marked ‘traitor,’ but before he could react Thorne and several others proceeded to stab him declaring it to be ‘for the Watch.’
Finally, after Olly tearfully stabs Jon in a scene reminiscent of the murder of Julius Caesar, Jon collapsed and died as his blood soaked the snow around him.
