The CultBox Podcast Roundup – March 2024

Posted Filed under

Happy Easter! Here’s our March 2024 Podcast Roundup – what we’ve been listening in the worlds of CultBox.

In no particular order, the picks this month are…

They Like to Watch: Little Wigs Abound! And Russell T Davies (DOCTOR WHO)

Sara Barron and Geoff Lloyd’s television watcher’s podcast hosts Russell T Davies. There’s plenty of insightful Doctor Who chat covering his approach to writing, the future of the show (and the BBC) and more – including why the modern show can make us cry. Plus, there are some terrific questions posed by the hosts’ young son too.

The Doctor Who Show – The List Makers: Top Tearjerkers

‘The List Makers’ is an additional podcast to the main news and reviews of The Doctor Who Show. The format is gloriously simple, the two hosts each pick a top five based on the theme of the month (drawn from Turlough’s hat of Rassilon). Short and sweet, it clocks in around 20 minutes and the chat is always thought-provoking. This month’s lists, on the subject of Doctor Who‘s Top Tearjerkers, held a mix old and new Who, with a few surprises.

Additionally, from the same team, the Alternate Galaxies “Cold Takes” on the Star Wars prequels are an entertaining listen. This month offered a frank assessment of the highs and lows of Star Wars Episode II – Attack of the Clones.

This special release is a recording of Katy Manning’s the Q&A session at a special Australian event last October. Katy is a force of nature and the audience questions launch her into delivering a ton of great anecdotes. From working with Sir Derek Jacobi, to missing out on a full appearance in ‘The Five Doctors’ and tips on wearing a mini skirt – it’s all in there and more.

Previous live events have featured Sophie Aldred, Janet Fielding and Wendy Padbury. You can also find the Q&A in vision on YouTube.

Bonnie Langford joined Gaby for a chat though some of her incredibly varied career. The half-hour conversation covers a lot – from meeting Stephen Sondheim at eight years old to the insane security protocols behind The Masked Dancer.

Naturally, there’s plenty of Doctor Who chat too. Bonnie talks about her time on the show in the 80s and Mel’s return for its recent 60th Anniversary story ‘The Giggle’.

Into The TARDIS

Into the TARDIS podcast

The much-anticipated Big Finish audio drama podcast Into the TARDIS dropped on the 28th, beginning a run of episodes from their 25 year archive. Each story is topped and tailed by Ol’ Sixie himself, Colin Baker, and includes a little behind-the-scenes material too.

First up: 2016’s ‘Death and the Queen’, an adventure for David Tennant and Catherine as the Tenth Doctor and Donna.

Film Stories with Simon Brew

This month, Simon Brew dug into Film Stories behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, The Phantom, Dunkirk, Dangerous Minds, A View to a Kill and Buster. Plus, there’s the story of Ghostbusters II followed by an interview with Winston Zeddemore himself – actor Ernie Hudson.

Also, on the Ghostbusters theme, there was a special interview with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire co-writer and director Gil Kenan.

So, happy listening… and do let us know if you have any recommendations too.
