Developers are always a little nervous when Hollywood tries to create a movie version of their beloved creations, but sometimes it pays off.
Assassins Creed, for example, is the latest franchise to dip its toe into the world of film, with Michael Fassbender taking on the lead role.
So, let’s take a look at the video games that have made it to the silver screen…
Resident Evil
The Resident Evil franchise is one of the longest running horror series featuring zombies on the silver screen, with six films under the belt – the last one to be released in 2017. While the films don’t necessarily follow the games storyline closely – Alice (the main protagonist) isn’t actually a character in the game series at all – the premise is still there with the Umbrella Corporation creating the T-virus that dooms humanity and brings about the undead plague.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
Angelina Jolie donned the tiny shorts and crop top (but no triangle boobs) when she took on the role of Lara for the Tomb Raider series, which was a surprisingly okay adaptation of Eidos Interactive’s series. While many argue that Jolie’s British accent is a little off putting and the script isn’t great, the action scenes are high quality and the filming locations stunning.
However, the franchise is getting a reboot and will perhaps take on the grittier format the recent games have followed: Alicia Vikander is taking on the role of Lara after beating contenders such as Star Wars’ Daisy Ridley and English rose Gemma Arterton to the post.
Silent Hill
Horror game series are a popular choice when it comes to film adaptations, and Keiichiro Toyama’s Silent Hill is disturbing, haunting and thrilling enough that it makes for great movie making.
While those who haven’t played the game might feel a little confused after watching the film, it’s scary enough to keep viewers hooked, following the story of Rose Da Silva who is trying to save her sick daughter. After paying a visit to Silent Hill, she more than regrets her decision… The ‘residents’ of the town are just as twisted, disturbing and horrifying as those in the game.
Prince of Persia
Okay, this film was a bit of a flop mainly due to audiences complaining about the casting of predominantly white actors for the roles, but it’s also a little cheesy too.
Created by Disney and the same crew who put together the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, it’s a fun take on the game, where the lead protagonist Dastan uses a special dagger to control time – a pretty helpful power in tricky fight scene situations!
So, it’s safe to say that if it’s action packed with well loved characters, it’s going to make it to the big screen eventually – so those online slot games you play on your tablet will probably remain untouched. That’s why the AC game is so hotly anticipated, and also why everyone is disappointed that Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series and Nate Drake’s adventures aren’t coming to a big screen anytime soon.
