The legend takes a romantic turn with a show that will focus on the romantic relationship between Rob and Marion.
With showrunner John Glenn and producer/director Jonathan English (The Ark), MGM+ are tacking the legend of Robin Hood.
Production begins in February, with the show shooting a 10-episode first season at PFI Studios in Serbia.
Robin Hood on the screen
Tales of Robin, his merry men and the villainous Sherriff of Nottingham have come to the big screen repeatedly over the decades. From silent movies in the 1920s right up to the present day.
Famously, Kevin Costner dominated 1991 with Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, pairing Hollywood with an earworm Bryan Adams power ballad. Plus, a stand out performance from the late, great Alan Rickman.
Robin Hood has also been successful on television too. Patrick Troughton starred in the 50s, before Richard Green took on the role for a long-running series. By the 80s, Robin of Sherwood brought a more fantastical edge to the legend with Michael Praed and Jason Connery.
In the 00s, the BBC’s Robin Hood pitted Jonas Armstrong against Keith Allen’s Sherriff across three seasons. The show made a star of Richard Armitage as Guy of Gisborne.
Here’s the series concept for the MGM+ take on Robin Hood:
Robin Hood brings a modern energy to the classic tale of the roguish outlaw hero who stole from the rich and gave to the poor, and the epic love story between him and a courageous and daring Marian. It is a smart, sweeping, romantic adventure that brings historical authenticity, psychological depth, and a heightened focus on the relationship between Rob and Marian to the beloved story. Following the Norman invasion of England, Rob – a Saxon forester’s son – and Marian, the daughter of a Norman lord – fall in love and work together to fight for justice and freedom. As Rob rises as the leader of a band of rebel outlaws, Marian infiltrates the power at court, as both work together to thwart royal corruption and bring peace to the land.
English and Glenn said:
“Robin Hood is a global brand and a story we’ve both been obsessed with since our youth. We are truly honored to have partnered with MGM+, Lionsgate and Todd, to bring this classic story back to life.”
The series comes from Lionsgate Television and Todd Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures.
Premiering on MGM+ in the U.S., Robin Hood will be available to MGM+ viewers in the U.K., Italy, Germany, Spain, Latin America, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. In the UK, MGM+ is available as a subscription add-on to Amazon’s Prime Video.
