- Nadia’s heading into another time portal…
Way back in 2019, after the success of Netflix’s time looping Russian Doll, we learned it had been recommissioned. Now, the streamer has begun to share images from the next chapter of the show.
Russian Doll Season 2 will be set four years after the first. The new episodes will follow Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) and Alan (Charlie Barnett) as they pass through an unexpected time portal in Manhattan which causes them both to face their past.
Star Natasha Lyonne, who’s the co-creator, showrunner and executive producer told Entertainment Weekly:
“It’s definitely a wild ride. It is deep, and deeply off-the-wall. I genuinely think the joy of the game is to watch it with fresh eyes as much as you can in order to be taken by the story.”
“We all pushed ourselves to the limit of what we thought we could make happen visually and through the storytelling. With my whole heart, I hope that people watch it all and see where the game goes and lands. I can’t believe we pulled it off.”
Cast
Greta Lee, Yul Vazquez and Elizabeth Ashley are all expected to return. Additionally, the show is adding Sharlto Copley (Powers), Annie Murphy (Schitt’s Creek) and Carolyn Michelle Smith (Colony). Ephraim Sykes (Hamilton) is also going to guest star.
On the production side, Natasha Lyonne remains as showrunner and executive producer. Season 2 is also produced by Alex Buono, Amy Poehler & Kate Arend (Paper Kite Productions), Leslye Headland, Lilly Burns & Tony Hernandez (Jax Media), Dave Becky (3 Arts), Regina Corrado and Allison Silverman.
Three seasons?
Way back in 2019, when season 1 launched, a pretty in-depth piece ran in The Hollywood Reporter. It’s still worth a read, especially for this quote from Leslye Headland:
“We pitched Netflix three seasons of the most bonkers, heartfelt, passionate, this-is-what-we-truly-feel-like-is-our-story-to-tell idea. And they said: ‘Great, the more of that, the better. The more you guys this can be, the better. Here are the resources and the support — take off.’”
After setting such a high bar it will be fascinating to see where the show goes next. In the meantime, we think the first run deserves a rewatch.
Russian Doll Season 2 will land this spring on Netflix. We’ll keep you posted.
