Season 2 was originally eyeing a spring production start date…
It’s already been confirmed that Picard will continue the next phaser (sorry) of his life on CBS All-Access. Deadline revealed that season 2 of the character’s new TV series was given the green light at the streaming service after receiving $20.4 million in California tax incentives to keep the party going. Season 1, which is available on Amazon Prime Video here in the UK , had already received $15.6 million in tax incentives.
Season 1 saw the reappearance of some familiar Star Trek faces, including Brent Spiner, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Jeri Ryan and Jonathan Del Arco, and it looks like season 2 will welcome back LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge.
“How do I say this without getting in trouble… I think that is reasonable to assume that those people are still a part of Picard”s life and – sure, what the hell – yeah, absolutely! You’ll see us all, probably not all at the same time but, you know, never say never,” Burton confirmed to Entertainment Tonight.
Whoopi Goldberg has also been given a “formal invitation” to return to the role of Guinan, who she played in 29 episodes of Star Trek: The next Generation. Patrick Stewart offered the olive branch on behalf of himself and executive producer Alex Kurtzman on her talk show, The View.
“Star Trek was one of the great experiences from the beginning to the end,” Goldberg responded. “I had the best, best, best time. Best time ever!”
“Well, it was wonderful having you, and we cannot wait to have you with us again one more time,” Stewart replied.
Star Trek: Picard stars Stewart as he reprises his role as ex-Enterprise captain Jean-Luc Picard. He had previously played Picard in both The Next Generation and its subsequent spinoff movies. In the just-concluded series, his character is brought back out of retirement when a new enemy threatens the Federation after the destruction of Romulus.
Deadline indicates that the second season of Picard will once again have ten episodes, though production is currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
More soon.
