Star Trek Section 31 spinoff is still in development

Conversations are ongoing for the show with Michelle Yeoh’s Emperor Phillipa Georgiou.

Thanks to streaming and the advent of Paramount+, the Star Trek universe has expanded impressively in the past few years. However, it seems that there’s still hope for a “Section 31” television series.

The prospective show would feature Michelle Yeoh as the mirror universe’s former Emperor Phillipa Georgiou. Spinning out of Star Trek: Discovery, it would take place in the worlds of interstellar espionage. Section 31 are Starfleet Intelligence black ops, working outside the ranks to quell threats to the Federation.

Hope that a series may yet still come was bolstered by a comment from Paramount Streaming chief programming officer Tanya Giles, who recently assured TVLine “It’s still in development”.

Looking back to a TrekMovie.com interview from May 2022, Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman indicated that Section 31 was once of two shows in development, alongside a Starfleet Academy series.

However, quite where Michelle Yeoh might fit filming the show into her busy schedule is open to question. Since playing the role across the first three years of Star Trek: Discovery, which culminated in the former Emperor being sent back in time to the pre-TOS timeframe, Yeoh has starred in movies such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Everything Everywhere All at Once. Plus, streaming TV projects including The School for Good and Evil and The Witcher: Blood Origin.

Darker Trek?

As Joe George of Den of Geek discusses, there’s also the question of tone. Would a darker show sit happily alongside the optimistic Strange New Worlds on the Paramount+ slate? However, with Picard ending and Discovery reaching its fifth series, there could be room in the production schedule.

We’ll keep you posted.
