Here is a closer look at whether the television show and movie streaming giant Netflix will move to acquire rights to broadcast live sports. It appears, in recent months, Netflix has been actively looking into acquiring the rights for several major sporting events and leagues from around the world.
Will Netflix soon be streaming major sporting events?
Netflix recently held talks to purchase the World Surf League, but negotiations ultimately collapsed. The streaming giant also lost out to ESPN in their bid to broadcast US Formula 1 races, as well as losing out on being able to broadcast upcoming ATP tennis matches from the United Kingdom and France. They are clearly trying to get into sports streaming, but it just doesn’t seem to be working out for them.
In comparison, Netflix’s biggest rival, Amazon Prime, have managed to secure several rights over the past 12 months to broadcast numerous major global sporting events, and they are now streaming them on a daily basis. Amazon Prime is clearly way ahead of the game compared to its rivals. With all this in mind, it doesn’t look as though Netflix subscribers will be able to log in to their account to watch sports any time soon, despite Netflix’s persistent efforts to try and secure broadcasting/streaming rights.
